majestic Himalayas of Nepal lies a hidden gem of spiritual significance. Gosaikunda (also known as Gosainkunda)&#8217;s sacred alpine lake is shrouded in myth and legend, drawing pilgrims and trekkers alike to its pristine waters. The name Gosainkunda is derived from Gosain which means Lord and Kund is the holy pond. It is believed that this lake is very important because it was created by Lord Shiva&#8217;s trident.<\/li><li>A magnificent lake (pond) on a rocky surface surrounded by intense snow. Nature seems to have made Gosaikund a masterpiece of art. This lake is located at an attractive height of 4380 meters (14,370 feet) from sea level in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gosaikundamun.gov.np\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Gosaikunda Rural Municipality<\/span><\/a> of Rasuwa District of Bagmati Province. The spectacular lake spans an impressive 34 acres, surrounded by at least 108 smaller lakes. Some are Bhairavkunda, Saraswatikunda, Suryakunda, Raktakunda, Chandrakunda, Aamkunda, Dudhkunda, and more&#8230; Together with the associated lakes, the Gosaikund lake complex is 1,030 hectares (2,500 acres) and was designated a Ramsar site on 29 September 2007. As per mythology, during the churning of the ocean, gods and demons took part in obtaining nectar (Amrit) from the bottom of the ocean. To save the world, Lord Shiva drank the &#8216;Halahal Kalkoot&#8217; poison released by the churning of the ocean, which threatened the entire creation. After consuming a poison, Lord Shiva went in search of water to soothe the effects of that poison and after hitting the Himalayan rock with a trident, pure water came from the surface of the mountain. While drinking clean pure water, a big pond called Gosaikunda was formed.<\/li><li>Thousands of devotees visit Gosaikunda twice a year (Janai Purnima and Gangadasahara) to see Lord Shiva sleeping in that water. Especially in the Hindu community, remembering this tradition, bathing in Gosaikunda, throwing coconuts in the pond for worship, lighting oil lamps in leaves, and giving &#8216;Agni Tarpan&#8217; (Praying with lighting fire) for attaining Shivamoksha is customary. The devotees return home believing they will find abode in heaven after death.<\/li><li>The waters of Gosaikunda are believed to have healing powers and devotees make the pilgrimage for blessings and spiritual rejuvenation. Popular as a pilgrimage place, the lake&#8217;s origin also appears in the Hindu scriptures of the Bhagavata Purana, the Vishnu Purana, and the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. Additionally, Hindu mythology designates Gosaikunda as the abode of one mighty Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.<\/li><li>According to legend, the pond&#8217;s water in Patan&#8217;s Kumbheshwar temple complex is brought from Gosaikunda. As the waters of Gosaikunda and Kumbheshwar are related, those who cannot make a long journey to Gosaikunda visit Kumbeshwar Lake (pond).<\/li><li>The Newari community of Nepal is called Gosaikund as Silu. During the Anglo-Nepal War (1814-1816), Amar Singh Thapa, the Nepalese commander of the western region, traveled here and breathed his last during a pilgrimage.
